Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing - Old School, baby. Mine is the 1976 version, which is a year younger than I am. I've heard the newer version is good, but it seems a shame to give up such a classic when, while styles change, techniques usually do not.
How to Make Sewing Patterns by Donald McCunn - Has really indepth instructions for creating just about any kind of pattern you could want to make. Shows how to do all the fancy-pants details, too, without you having to go out and find a pattern that has that specific detail. LOVE it.
Unit Method of Clothing Construction by the Iowa Home Economics Association - used in tandem with my Reader's Digest. Has a nifty chart that I adapted to use for figuring necessary alterations for any pattern.
